The REALCHEM project is a collaborative research initiative dedicated to creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for transportation, with funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe program. Focusing on sectors where electrification is challenging (aviation, shipping, heavy-duty vehicles, and non-road mobile machinery) REALCHEM will thoroughly investigate the impact of low-carbon fuels and advanced engine technologies on air quality, human health, and the environment. By combining real-world testing, modelling, and comprehensive data analysis, REALCHEM will provide valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public, contributing to the EU’s ambitious climate goals.
At the heart of REALCHEM’s approach is a commitment to generating reliable scientific data to achieve the European Union’s Green Deal and the vision of zero pollution by 2050.
At the heart of REALCHEM’s approach is a commitment to generating reliable scientific data to achieve the European Union’s Green Deal and the vision of zero pollution by 2050. Our researchers are conducting detailed studies on the emissions characteristics of low-carbon fuels, seeking to understand how these fuels perform in various engines and operating conditions. Beyond measuring regulated pollutants, REALCHEM is pioneering techniques to quantify emerging pollutants, such as ultrafine particles, assessing their potential impact on air quality, climate, and human health. This research provides a detailed assessment of the effects of the introduction of low-carbon fuels.
REALCHEM will take real-world data, obtained from cutting-edge resources in 7 different countries across the EU, and use existing historical, scientific, and governmental databases to develop actionable plans for researchers, corporations and governmental bodies. Also, the models used in REALCHEM’s analysis include several atmospheric factors not often implemented, thereby providing the more accurate, complete information for decision making.
The REALCHEM project is a testament to the power of collaborative research, funded by the European Union, in addressing complex environmental challenges. By working across disciplines and engaging with industry and policy stakeholders, REALCHEM aims to develop actionable strategies for transitioning to a cleaner, more sustainable transportation system that benefits both our planet and our health. The intention is to meet and adhere to what is demanded of research in this area from EU documentation.
