The Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) is a leading institute for applied environmental research and consultancy services in Sweden, undertaking projects and assignments in the wide range of research areas relating to the sustainable development, environment and climate.
The IVL REALCHEM team is allocated in the Transport and Mobility group conducting research and providing expertise in the field of sustainable transport and mobility solutions, including emissions, fuels, abatement technologies, emission measurements, modelling, inventories and more.
The hard-to-electrify sectors meet their match
IVL joined the REALCHEM consortium with interest in contributing to the development of cleaner solutions for hard-to-electrify transport sectors. In REALCHEM, their team has found an opportunity to increase their understanding of these sectors´ impacts on air quality and climate, in particular the less well-understood contributions from emerging and climate-forcing air pollutants, and to seek together with involved stakeholders for solutions avoiding unwanted negative impacts.

How are they using their expertise in REALCHEM?
IVL contributes both to the experimental and the analytical/theoretical part of the project. Building on our experiences from previous projects, among others H2020 projects SCIPPER and EMERGE, IVL supports the measurement campaigns on ship and helicopter engines with investigation of emissions of the emerging pollutants including polyaromatic compounds and secondary pollutants formed after aging of emissions in the atmosphere. IVL also leads tasks on development of technological trajectories that will be used as a base for further REALCHEM assessments of the impact of adaptation of low carbon fuels and mitigation measures. Further IVL leads a task on life cycle emissions for the investigated fuels and measures, and a task on the assessment of emissions’ impacts on health, relevant environmental indicators, and climate. IVL also contributes to the air pollution modelling and the development of projections of human exposure to air pollutants.
According to the IVL team, REALCHEM is important because the transition to low-carbon fuels must be based on a broad understanding of environmental performance. Results produced in REALCHEM will contribute to cleaner technological solutions and more effective policy instruments. At IVL, they will use these results to improve our models, emission inventories and future projections used in our research and services.
